Origin Stories - Alan HarrisIn this week’s installment of Origin Employee Feature, we are interviewing our Director of Marketing, Alan Harris. Alan began his career with Origin after a merger of his Milwaukee-based business, Urban Caveman. As the head of Origin’s marketing team, Alan works hard to spread the mission and message of Origin, all while living in Milwaukee with his wife and two little ones.



Tell us a little about yourself. 

I have always had a passion for yummy food and fitness since I was young. I have played competitive sports my entire life from 3-year-old soccer to a 4-sport athlete in high school. I grew up in Central Texas the home of sweet tea and chicken fried steak, and it wasn’t until I was in my 20’s that my passion for tasty food took a health focus. Like many, in college I had gained weight and not the good kind. I also discovered that my poor eating habits were taking a toll on me not just physically but mentally and emotionally as well. I made a decision to make a radical change and lost almost 50 pounds in the first two years after college graduation. The lifestyle change made such an impact on me, that I decided to start creating businesses to help others do the same. I worked nights and weekends on my first company while working full time at my corporate job for the first 8 months, then took the plunge and went full time working on my own companies

What led you to a career with Origin?

I came to Origin when my company, The Urban Caveman, merged with Origin in the Fall of 2016. We had a created a product offering very similar to what we produce at Origin Meals and the partnership was a natural fit. I now oversee many of Origin’s sales and marketing functions.  

What are you passionate about?

I am not unique amongst those of us at Origin when I say I am in this business because I am passionate about creating products and services that help other people lead a happier and healthier life. Beyond that, I love drinking coffee and learning about new things, people and ideas. 

What’s the best meal you’ve ever had?

When I was 18 we took a scuba diving trip to Belize with one of my best friends and our fathers. While we were there we went on a fishing trip and brought back the fresh catch to a local chef who created an amazing dinner with it. The setting and fresh seafood was an amazing memory with people I care about.

How do you “recharge your batteries?”

I love waking up early and hitting the gym with my good friend and training partner, Matt. About 50% of our time is actually working out and 50% of the time is spent making jokes and talking about life.

Have you recently set a goal that you’re working to achieve?

My primary focus right now is getting great food into the hands of as many people as possible. I truly believe that what we do can make a positive impact on people’s lives and I feel an obligation to do as best as I can to get it to them.

What is an interesting fact that others may not know about you?

I have a knack for remembering obscure details, especially when it comes to people. I have weirded people out when I remember, for example, that they were our waiter 3 years early and can place the date, place and time.

Where would someone find you on a Saturday night?

Asleep. We have a new baby so I’m in bed pretty early these days.
